Our bodies are incredibly sensitive to the environment around us. One of the most powerful and practical ways to support your health at the cellular level is by eating as locally and seasonally as possible… … writes Naturopathic Nutritionist Erica.
When we consume food grown near us, especially fresh, minimally processed, and organic, we reduce the toxic load on our bodies, especially on our liver, the primary detoxification organ. A lighter toxic load means better energy, improved hormonal balance, and increased vitality.
Local food refers to produce such as fruits, vegetables, herbs, eggs, and other items grown and harvested in your region/near your region, you can find these products at your local farmers’ markets (one of our personal favourites here on the French Riviera is the Marché Provençal d’Antibes), or directly from small-scale farms.
As local food is usually picked at peak ripeness, it means that they are: more flavourful, higher in nutrients and aligned with seasonal eating, supporting our body’s natural balance.
Many large-scale agricultural products are sprayed with pesticides, herbicides, and synthetic chemicals that can interfere with our hormones (specifically our endocrine system). This is especially relevant for women.
Some pesticides mimic the structure of oestrogen, a key female hormone, and can bind to oestrogen receptors in the body. This can lead to hormonal imbalances, symptoms of oestrogen dominance, and increased toxic load on the liver.
By choosing locally grown and organic produce, often cultivated without these harsh substances, you reduce your exposure to endocrine disruptors and support better hormonal health.
The power of farmers’ markets

Farmers’ markets are more than a weekend activity, buying locally:
- Shortens the supply chain
- Reduces environmental impact
- Increases transparency around how your food is grown
- Supports small producers who are more likely to avoid harmful chemicals
You also get the opportunity to ask questions and build relationships with growers, creating a deeper connection with your food and community.
How to choose toxin-free foods

Supporting your health through food starts with mindful choices. Here’s how you can reduce your exposure to toxins:
- Choose organic and local whenever possible and always wash your produce.
- Choose grass-fed meats and wild-caught fish over farmed or grain-fed options.
- Avoid ultra-processed foods and sugary beverages.
- Remove plastic packaging, bring reusable bags, use glass containers, or go for a panier (straw basket) for your produce.
- Talk to your local producers. Ask where and how they grow their food
Detox-supporting local produce you’ll find on the French Riviera

Here are some nutrient-rich options commonly found in markets across the French Riviera:
- Olive oil: rich in antioxidants and liver-supportive fats
- Lemons: stimulate bile production and digestion
- Apples: high in pectin, a fibre that binds to toxins
- Berries: full of antioxidants
- Mushrooms: support immunity and detox enzymes
- Spinach & red cabbage: sulphur-rich for detox pathways
- Carrots, red peppers, tomatoes, red onions: colourful and anti-inflammatory
- Wild fish, oysters, and eggs: provide essential detoxification nutrients like selenium and B vitamins
- Oranges: high in vitamin C for cellular detox
- Rosemary: supports liver health and digestion
