Ironman Nice is Cancelled due to Heat Wave

The Ironman in Nice, France, which was due to be held on Sunday, has been cancelled due to the current heat wave (or ‘canicule’ as they say in French).

Ironman France said: “Due to a decision by the Alpes-Maritimes Prefecture following extreme heat conditions and the extension of the heatwave alert, the Ramify IRONMAN France Nice and IRONMAN 70.3 Nice races scheduled for 28 June have been cancelled.”

At the time of publishing, the official website had not yet been updated. For many participants, who have been preparing for months, even years, and who have already made the journey to Nice for the event on Sunday, the news will be devastating. But the decision has been made for the safety of all, with health services already stretched as the heatwave continues.

Ironman France said: “We know how much this start line means to our athletes, and we share your disappointment. The safety and wellbeing of athletes, volunteers, staff, and the wider community will always remain our top priority.

“IRONMAN and the City of Nice are now working together on next steps and possible solutions for affected athletes. Further updates will be shared as soon as they are confirmed.

“Thank you for your understanding, patience, and continued support.”

At least 4,500 athletes have reportedly been affected by the cancellation.

The  heatwave in Europe has led to several cancellations or modifications of outdoor events, and Nice has not been the worst hit by the soaring temperatures with several regions (including Paris) reporting temperatures close to 40°C!

On its website, Ironman  describes Nice as offering athletes the best of the Côte d’Azur. “Nestled between sea and mountains, experience a well-rounded course, remarkable location and a finish line on the Promenade des Anglais – one of the most iconic locations in French triathlon,” it says.
