Living Your Best Life in France… and the Paperwork That Comes With It

For many, moving to France is the dream: mornings with croissants, long lunches under the sun, a slower pace of life, and that unmistakable joie de vivre. The Riviera in particular seems to promise it all : beauty, culture, and the Mediterranean lifestyle that social media makes look so effortless… writes Tracy Leonettifounder of LBS in France.

But anyone who’s tried to make France their home knows there’s another side to that postcard-perfect image, the one filled with forms, appointments, and obscure acronyms.

Living your best life in France, it turns out, often begins with surviving its paperwork.

Behind the lifestyle, there’s the Bureaucratic Reality…

For non-EU citizens, the dream can quickly feel like a test of endurance. The visa and residency process, already complicated, seems to evolve every few months. Requirements vary depending on your status, and the official websites don’t always agree with what the prefecture tells you. Even once you’ve arrived, you’ll face renewal deadlines, inexplicable delays, online portals, and the occasional mysterious rejection email written entirely in administrative French.

And for EU citizens, who once thought they could breeze in effortlessly? The reality can still be long and frustrating. Applying for health coverage or registering for tax can feel like navigating a maze where every path leads to another website, and another password you’ve forgotten.

Digitalisation promised progress…but is it really ?

In theory, moving applications online was meant to simplify things. The processes I faced over 3 decades ago when I came to France were very different to the ones faced today. No more queuing at dawn in front of the prefecture, right? In practice, while the digital shift has made some steps more efficient, it’s also removed the one thing people relied on most: human help.

Today, if a form doesn’t validate or an upload fails, there’s rarely anyone to call. The chatbots don’t understand your question, and emails often go unanswered. Many new arrivals describe the experience as being caught in a digital loop, endlessly refreshing a page in the hope that this time, it might just work.

Beyond the paperwork lies a human struggle..

Behind the bureaucracy lies something deeper: emotion. Moving to a new country already takes courage, leaving behind family, language, and familiarity. When the systems meant to help you settle instead cause confusion and stress, it can be disheartening.

That’s why support networks have become so valuable. From local Facebook groups to relocation specialists who know the system inside out, people are finding ways to bring back the human element. Guidance, reassurance, and experience can turn what feels like an impossible process into something manageable. Services like LBS, for example, exist precisely to take that pressure off — helping newcomers navigate the paperwork, understand what’s needed, and feel supported through every step of their French journey.

In the end, most agree, it’s all worth it..

Despite the paperwork, most expats will tell you they’d do it all again. Because once the forms are submitted, the appointments completed, and the documents finally approved, life in France truly does live up to the dream.

It’s the morning markets, the café culture, the light over the Mediterranean. It’s learning to slow down, to savour moments, and to feel at home in a country that prizes both tradition and beauty.

So yes, moving to France may require patience, persistence, and perhaps an extra bottle of wine during the paperwork phase. But once the boxes are unpacked and the residency card arrives, you’ll understand why it was all worth it.

After all, living your best life in France wouldn’t feel quite so satisfying if it were too easy.

At LBS in France, I help individuals and families make informed decisions, handle paperwork, and find clarity in the complex world of French administration.
