With Christmas only a few weeks away, let’s spare a thought for seniors who live alone. Riviera Lifeline is a non-profit, non-denominational organisation serving the Var and the Alpes Maritimes. Set up in June 2017, it works in association with the Sunnybank charity which helps people in care homes and hospitals.
Riviera Lifeline is entirely dependent on donations and is powered by a remarkable team of volunteers. Prior to Brexit, they numbered 60. But at the moment, they only have 10 and are desperately in need of another 40 to join their team. New volunteers must be willing to commit to a minimum of 2 hours per week.
Their Mission
Their mission is simple, yet profoundly human. Riviera Lifeline’s volunteers visit seniors in their own homes, offering companionship, conversation, and the reassuring presence of a friendly face. Other tasks include doing welfare checks, driving a van to help with a move, assistance with French administration, gardening help, picking seniors up and taking them to appointments. And they even offer to take care of domestic pets if necessary. A highlight of the week for many seniors is a free lunch every Thursday at The Grange in Mouans-Sartoux where they get to enjoy a homecooked meal.
Volunteers
Riviera Lifeline’s vibrant team of volunteers bring together a world of experiences. From people recently arrived on the Côte d’Azur, to long-time residents who have called this sun-kissed coastline home for decades. In a society that moves quickly, these moments of connection remind us not to overlook the fact that, even in a place as beautiful as the French Riviera, there are many people in need of help.
As Debbie Cortey, president of Riviera Lifeline says:
Little things make a big difference. But we need a regular commitment from our volunteers. When you say you’re going to do something, you have to do it.
