At its core, biohacking is about hacking your biology in order to feel your best, look your best, and slow down ageing… writes Naturopathic Nutritionist Erica. It’s about fine-tuning your wellness routine to improve both physical and mental health. This can be done by optimising health through targeted nutrition, movement, and functional supplements such as mushrooms and adaptogens. Biohacking is a pleasure on the French Riviera where we have sunshine, beautiful nature and local markets.
The original idea of “biohacking” was actually very simple. It looked like exposing your face and body to natural sunlight to optimise vitamin D absorption, grounding your feet, walking in nature and breathing fresh air, swimming in cold water sources (a healthy stress that encourages hormesis – the body’s ability to grow stronger through challenge – and boosts BDNF, a protein that supports brain health), waking up with natural light to support healthy cortisol levels, and dimming lights in the evening to allow melatonin production.
This is how I “biohack” my life:
For me, biohacking isn’t about any extreme protocols. It’s about simple, intentional daily choices I make that make me feel my best.
Eat organic and local, avoid refined sugars and drink water
- I eat organic as much as possible and prioritise local foods.
- I choose herbal teas over plastic tea bags and avoid refined sugars, focusing instead on natural sources of sweetness.
- I drink water, coconut water, or herbal tea before consuming my delicious cup of coffee.
Seek out bitter foods, sunlight and natural oils
- I include bitter foods in my diet to support liver detoxification processes.
- I expose my eyes and skin to natural sunlight before putting on sunglasses.
- I include fresh herbs into my meals.
- I mostly cook at home, avoid alcohol, and use natural oils for body and face care.
Eat chlorophyll-rich foods and move daily
- I eat plenty of chlorophyll-rich foods to support cellular energy and make sure to move my lymphatic system daily.
- Moving my body and being out in fresh air is probably the most important “biohack” you can do for yourself and it’s free!
In the end, the growing popularity of biohacking is helping motivate people to live healthier lives and take care of their health more consistently than ever before, which is really positive.
Today, more than ever, we need to “biohack” simply because our modern world places a high level of environmental stress on the body: constant blue-light exposure, excessive screen time, processed foods, poor soil quality, pesticides, pollution, and nonstop stimulation from social media and global news.
