Monaco’s Prince Albert II Calls for Peace in Ukraine After Meeting with President Zelensky

Prince Albert II of Monaco reaffirmed his principality’s position on the conflict in Ukraine this morning at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, condemning “the war of aggression inflicted on Ukraine”. Moments after meeting briefly with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, Prince Albert delivered the following address:

“We live in a multipolar world where national interests tend to take precedence over the pursuit of a common international ideal.

“The growing number of peacekeeping operations demonstrates that dialogue and preventive diplomacy have unfortunately not always produced the expected results.

“Today, international security is gravely threatened. Regional tensions and conflicts spreading across the globe make it more essential than ever to reaffirm the founding principles of the United Nations: the sovereignty of States, the peaceful settlement of disputes, respect for international law, and human rights.

“In this regard, Monaco firmly condemns the war of aggression inflicted on Ukraine and the suffering it causes to civilian populations. I was able to reiterate this message just moments ago to President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“I express the hope that a just, lasting, and negotiated peace agreement can be reached as soon as possible, guaranteeing security and meeting the aspirations of the Ukrainian people.”
