The Nice Carnival on the French Riviera

This year the Nice Carnival will take place from 11 February to 1 March 2026. Elaborate floats (known as Corsi), adorned with stunning colours, sophisticated designs, and moving characters, parade through the city’s streets, to the joy of young and old. This year’s theme will be the King and Queen of the Oceans with a particular spotlight on protecting our seas and marine creatures. 

The origins of the Nice Carnival date back to the medieval period, with the first recorded celebrations taking place as far back as the 13th century. Initially, the carnival served as a period of feasting and merrymaking before the solemn season of Lent. Over the centuries, the event evolved, incorporating various cultural influences and themes. Finally turning it into the grand spectacle we witness today.

If you can only visit for a day, make sure you don’t miss the “Battle of Flowers” or “Batailles de Fleurs.” Dating back to 1876, this unique parade showcases elaborately decorated floats completely covered in fresh flowers. The only limit to these eye-catching floats is people’s imagination. As they wind their way through the streets, participants  throw flowers into the crowd. But you will have to be quick if you want to take any home, as the competition to catch bouquets of colourful scented flowers is fierce.

The Nice Carnival has made sure that musical performances also take pride of place to the delight of all music lovers. You can choose between traditional folk music, street performances as well as more contemporary rhythms. And in the evening, as you make your way home, you may come across various venues hosting concerts

The most famous event of the Nice Carnival is the symbolic burning of King Carnival, a giant figure representing the spirit of the carnival season. This tradition was introduced to mark the end of the festivities and the beginning of the Christian observance of Lent. The burning ceremony is accompanied by fireworks. And you will love the spectacular display against the night sky.

Finally, if you are concerned about the ecological footprint of such an event, you can rest assured. The Nice Carnival has recently adopted practices that show its commitment to sustainability and environmental protection. Everything that is recoverable is reused. And since last year (2024), all confetti and streamers have been biodegradable.

INSIDER TIP: If you come in costume from head to toe, entrance is free in pedestrian areas for the Corsi parades. Warning: a few accessories will not be enough!
