Cannes Lions: Shonda Rhimes on Storytelling, Leadership and the Global Power of Netflix

Shona Rhimes, the creator behind Grey’s Anatomy and Bridgerton, shared lessons at Cannes Lions 2025 from two decades of building some of television’s most successful franchises.

For more than twenty years, Shonda Rhimes has been telling stories that keep audiences glued to their screens.

As the creator of Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and the founder of Shondaland, she has built one of the most influential production companies in modern television.

Speaking at the famous creative event in Cannes, Rhimes reflected on the evolution of storytelling, the rise of streaming and the challenge of transforming a creative career into a global business.

The conversation offered a fascinating glimpse into how one of Hollywood’s most successful storytellers thinks about creativity, leadership and audience connection.

Why Netflix Changed Everything

One of the most striking moments came when Rhimes discussed the shift from traditional television to streaming.

For her, the move was never simply about budgets or technology.

It was about audience behaviour.

“That’s where I’m watching television,” she explained.

“And that’s where television is right now.”

Streaming platforms have fundamentally changed how stories travel around the world.

Rhimes pointed to Bridgerton as an example.

Unlike traditional broadcast television, where programmes often launch in different countries at different times, Netflix allows audiences around the world to watch simultaneously.

The result can be an immediate global phenomenon.

The idea that viewers in London, Los Angeles, Cape Town and Sydney can all experience the same show at exactly the same moment has transformed television into a truly international conversation.

The Dream of Global Storytelling

Rhimes also acknowledged how dramatically production values have changed.

The scale of investment now available for premium television would once have been unimaginable.

Referencing major productions such as The Crown, she noted how streaming platforms have redefined expectations around quality, ambition and visual storytelling.

For writers and producers, it has opened creative possibilities that simply did not exist a generation ago.

The boundaries between television and cinema continue to blur.

Stories That Matter

Long before Shondaland became a global brand, Rhimes was simply someone who wanted to tell stories.

She recalled her early career in San Francisco, where she began to realise that storytelling could have a genuine impact on people.

That belief remains at the centre of her work today.

Whether writing about romance, politics, friendship or family, the emotional connection between characters remains the foundation of every successful story.

Technology, budgets and distribution platforms may evolve.

Human relationships do not.

Brand Partnerships That Feel Natural

The conversation also touched on the growing relationship between entertainment and brands.

Rhimes was clear that successful partnerships cannot feel forced.

If a brand becomes part of a story, it needs to feel organic and relevant to the characters and world being portrayed.

The audience notices when something exists purely for commercial reasons.

The most successful collaborations, she argued, are those that genuinely support the narrative rather than interrupt it.

Learning to Lead

Perhaps the most revealing part of the discussion concerned leadership.

While Rhimes is widely recognised as a writer and producer, she now oversees a company employing hundreds of people across television, film, podcasts and other creative projects.

It was not a role she originally expected to have.

“I was going to be a novelist,” she joked.

Building Shondaland required learning skills far beyond storytelling.

One of the most important lessons was understanding that leadership does not mean doing everything yourself.

Instead, it means finding talented people, trusting them and allowing them to excel.

Rhimes explained that she deliberately surrounds herself with people who love what they do and are experts in their respective fields.

That trust allows her to focus on what she does best: creativity.

“My mind is best used thinking creatively,” she said.

Twenty Years of Shondaland

As Shondaland celebrates its twentieth anniversary, Rhimes shows little sign of slowing down.

The company continues to expand into new formats, including podcasts and emerging media, while maintaining its focus on compelling storytelling.

Yet after all the awards, ratings successes and global hits, her philosophy remains remarkably straightforward:

  • Tell stories that resonate.
  • Build relationships audiences care about.
  • Trust talented people.
  • And never lose sight of creativity.

For a woman who once dreamed of becoming a novelist, it has proved to be a remarkably effective formula.
