At least two boats caught fire in Marseille’s iconic Vieux-Port (Old Port) on Sunday morning, sending thick black smoke billowing above the city and prompting a major emergency response.
Marseille Naval Fire Brigade Battalion confirmed it had responded to a fire involving two boats in the Old Port, near the City Hall and the “Scène de l’Été” event venue.
“The fire was brought under control, but the two vessels – measuring 20 and 12 meters – unfortunately sank,” said the fire brigade.
“Six people suffered minor burns and were transported for treatment, while around ten others were treated for smoke inhalation.”
Officials said that a total of 150 naval firefighters and 37 vehicles were deployed for the incident.
Firefighters were commended for responding swiftly and establishing a safety perimeter around the affected area, while preventing the flames from spreading further throughout the busy marina.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
The Vieux-Port is one of Marseille’s best-known landmarks and a popular destination for residents and visitors alike, lined with restaurants, cafés and pleasure boats. Sunday’s incident attracted large crowds as smoke could be seen rising across the city.
The Marseilles Naval Fire Brigade Battalion is the largest unit in the French Navy, according to its Facebook page. It comprises 2,600 men and women, 21 fire and rescue stations (CIS), and says it responds to one incident every four minutes.
Many social media commenters said “bravo” and thanked the firemen for their courage.
