Les Restaurants du Coeur French Charity – Restos du Coeur

As the festive season approaches, let’s spare a thought for all those who struggle to put food on the table. And, according to Insee’s (The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies) latest figures, 9.8 million people or 15.4% of the French population now live below the poverty line. The highest number since records began in 1996.
This is what the Restaurants du Cœur (literally Restaurants of the Heart) charity, commonly known as the Restos du Cœur, is trying to address.

Background and Objectives

Restos du Cœur is a French charity founded by comedian Coluche (1944–1986) in 1985. Its main activity is to distribute food packages and hot meals to those in need. And to fight against all forms of social exclusion.

As early as 1985, Coluche established the foundations of what the Restos du Cœur still are today, with his wish to create a “restaurant for the poor”. They offer free assistance, an unconditional welcome, independence from political and religious influence, and a pragmatic approach to action.

Sadly Coluche died in a motorbike accident on 19 June 1986 on a road near Opio in the South of France, on his way from Cannes to Grasse, but his creation has continued and benefitted so many.

Each year a collection of about 50 musicians perform at Les Enfoirés, a music festival where all are united with one goal: to help benefit Les Restaurants du Cœur. All profits are donated to help the organisation help those who need it. The next big concert is in Paris, in January 2026. Tickets are already sold out.

Food Aid Key Figures

  • Restos du Coeur has 78,000 volunteers and runs 2,318 reception centres.
  • 161 million meals were distributed in 2024–2025.

In 2024–2025, 1.3 million people attended the centres, about the same as the previous year, during which Restos du Coeur experienced a massive increase in visits to their reception centers. Food assistance provides emergency help. But above all it represents the key point of contact for promoting the social inclusion of the most disadvantaged and helping them out of poverty.

Language Support Programme

The academic support workshops were created so that children never experience the precarious situations their parents may face. They are open to all students from primary school through to the final year of high school. And it is not dependent on their parents being registered for food assistance from the Restos du Cœur. In these workshops, children receive individualized support. The goal is not only to strengthen learning but also to rebuild self-confidence and restore their connection with school. These workshops take place in a friendly environment that encourages communication.

Coluche’s Law and Tax Benefits

The Coluche Law is a tax measure that rewards generosity. By supporting an association like the Restos du Cœur, you can not only help hundreds of thousands of people in difficulty, but also reduce your taxes!

Adopted in 1988, the Coluche Law, allows you to deduct 75% of the amount of your donation to the Restos du Cœur from your income tax, up to a limit of €1,000 per year. This advantageous measure is granted only for donations made to a select group of organizations recognized as being of public interest and that provide assistance to people in need.

UPDATE: From 6 to 8 March 2026, volunteers will be present in 7,500 supermarkets across France to collect food and hygiene products from shoppers doing their grocery shopping.
