French film icon Brigitte Bardot has sadly passed away at the age of 91, her foundation confirmed in a statement on Sunday morning (28 December 2025).
“The Brigitte Bardot Foundation announces with immense sadness the death of its founder and president, Madame Brigitte Bardot, a world-renowned actress and singer, who chose to abandon her prestigious career to dedicate her life and energy to animal welfare and her foundation,” the Foundation.
Just under a month ago, the star called for calm following reports that she had been rushed to hospital twice in one month.
At the time she reassured her fans through a statement on the Brigitte Bardot Foundation (FBB) and said: “I send you all my love!”
Brigitte Bardot shot to worldwide fame after starring in Roger Vadim’s ‘And God Created Woman’. The movie, which was filmed in Saint-Tropez in the ’50s, turned both the fishing village and Bardot into global icons.
But, shocking the world, Bardot quit her film career and moved to Saint-Tropez at the height of her success, when she was just 39. She was driven by a passion and commitment to protect animals and fight for their rights, and in 1986 she founded the Brigitte Bardot Animal Foundation for this purpose.
Saint-Tropez Tourism said Bardot found a “genuine refuge here, (and) an intimate connection”. She lived in Saint-Tropez for over 50 years, and is reported to have passed away at La Madrague, her home since 1958.
Our thoughts are with Brigitte Bardot’s family, friends and fans. Ms Bardot leaves one son Nicolas-Jacques Charrier (now 65) and two grandchildren. They will reportedly be at her funeral.
Where and when is Brigitte Bardot’s funeral?
Saint-Tropez municipality says a ceremony will be held at 11am on Wednesday 7 January at the Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption Catholic Church. It will be broadcast on large screens at the famous Saint-Tropez port and at Place des Lices. A private ceremony will be held afterwards.
