Tom Cruise is returning to the Cannes Film Festival this year with ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’, the Cannes Film Festival announced today (8 April 2025).
The American actor and producer was here, on the French Riviera, just three years ago for his triumphant premiere of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ (which was credited with jump-starting the movie industry post-Covid).
The much anticipated sequel, will be presented Out of Competition at the Grand Théâtre Lumière (that’s the main cinema in Cannes’ famous Palais, at the top of the red-carpeted stairs).
When will Tom Cruise be in Cannes?
The Hollywood star will walk the red carpet on 14 May, along with his long-time collaborator, director and screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, and the cast of the film.
This marks the US legend’s third trip to the Croisette. He first came in 1992 for the premiere of Ron Howard’s ‘Far and Away’, and then again in 2022 for the Maverick premiere, and to receive an honorary Palme d’Or.
Tom Cruise’s first ‘mission impossible’
He also delivered a masterclass – ‘In Conversation with Tom Cruise’ – to which I was lucky enough to receive an invitation. He shared a story with us then about the beginnings of his passion for action films, risky stunts, and learning new skills.

“When I was four-and-a-half – I had a doll – you know you threw it in the air and it would parachute down,” he explained. He would climb trees and throw the GI Parachutist doll in the air. One day, lying on his bed, he had a brainwave – he tied his sheets together and got on the roof to see if he could parachute off the roof.
“My mom was in the kitchen. We were four kids. I jumped off the roof, and as I was falling, I realised ‘this, this is not gonna work, this is terrible, I’m gonna die.'”
But luckily, despite hitting the ground hard, “it was wet (so) my face went past my feet as my ass hit the ground… I was dizzy! ‘Oh my God,’ I realised, ‘my mom’s gonna kill me coz the sheets were dirty!’ I was a kid who wanted that… to develop skills.”
‘Our lives are the sum of our choices’
In his latest Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Tom’s character Ethan Hunt, whom he has portrayed since the start of the franchise (back in 1996), and his IMF team ask us to trust them one last time!

Summed up in a few words, the trailer teases: “Our lives are the sum of our choices” and says “every choice, every mission, has all led to this”.
According to Paramount Pictures: “After almost three decades of thrills, stunts and intrigue, The Final Reckoning delivers an unforgettable cinematic experience.”
The cast alongside Tom includes Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Henry Czerny, Mariela Garriga and Angela Bassett.
The nationwide French release is 21 May 2025, with the US release on 23 May.
