Prince Albert II of Monaco marked 20 years on the throne last weekend with celebrations in the heart of Monaco, in the Palace Square.

In an emotionally charged speech the prince thanked the Monegasque people and his family for their support during his two decades as Sovereign.

At one point, he tearfully paused, as he revealed he thanks “my wife Charlene and our children Jacques and Gabrielle, every day for their love and support”. The three stepped forward at that point to embrace the prince in an affectionate moment.

Pomp and grandeur were replaced by palpable affection throughout the day, as the royal family wandered around the crowd and greeted locals, shaking hands and sharing smiles.

There was no grand parade or choreographed displays. Instead it felt like a neighbourly exchange of gratitude.

The celebrations were topped off by a ‘sweet’ surprise – an enormous cake which was shared with all the gathered guests.
