Kinds of Kindness is a “triptych fable”, a film with three stories depicting different characters played by the same actors – including Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe and Jesse Plemons (who won the Best Actor award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival for his sensitive portrayals in Kinds of Kindness).
According to the production notes, the film follows “a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.”
The drama is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, who also has co-writer and co-producer credits; and reunites him with Dafoe, Stone and Margaret Qualley (‘Maid’) who all starred in Lanthimos’s brilliant ‘Poor Things’. The cast also include Hong Chau, Mamoudou Athie, Joe Alwyn and Hunter Schafer.
As with all Lanthimos’ productions, the film takes its viewers on a wildly imaginative and unpredictable journey, with some violence and nudity along the way. It is fairly long at 2 hours and 44 minutes.
