United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice
Co-hosted by the governments of France and Costa Rica, the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) will take place in Nice in the South of France from 9 to 13 June 2025. The Conference will build on the previous UN Ocean Conferences, hosted by Sweden and Fiji in 2017 in New York and by Portugal and Kenya in 2022 in Lisbon.
According to the United Nations website, the high-level 2025 United Nations Conference aims to support urgent action. And mobilize all actors to “conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development” (as stated in Sustainable Development Goal 14). And to also identify further ways and means to encourage the implementation of SDG 14.
It will bring together heads of states and governments, United Nations member states, financial institutions, international bodies, the private sector and philanthropic organizations. Plus all other relevant stakeholders concerned by the conservation and protection of the oceans.
An Action-Focused Conference
As stated on UNOC3’s official website, the conference will be focused on “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean“. It will seek support to implement SDG14 with three main priorities:
- Priority 1
Work towards the successful completion of ocean-related multilateral processes to raise the level of ambition for ocean protection. - Priority 2
Mobilizing funding for SDG14 and supporting the development of a sustainable blue economy - Priority 3
Strengthen and better disseminate marine science knowledge for better policy-making.
The Nice Ocean Action Plan
The Nice Ocean Action Plan, consisting of a political declaration as well as a list of voluntary commitments from stakeholders, will be adopted following international discussions during the Conference.
The United Nations Ocean Conference’s motto is Our Ocean, Our Future, Our Responsibility.
PLEASE NOTE: A program called We are the Ocean will be open to the general public. It will take place from 2-13 June in different locations, including the Palais des Expositions in Nice.
