The French Weather Bureau has issued a Yellow Alert for rain and flooding in the Alpes-Maritimes region tomorrow morning, Wednesday 7 October 2026, between 08:00 and 10:00.
The French warning systems range from Red (take action) to Orange (be prepared) and Yellow (be aware / watch).
A front is expected, bringing rain and thunderstorms which could lead to surface runoff in vulnerable areas and rising water levels in local streams.
Cannes is prepared for possible floods
Cannes City Hall says it has contacted business owners and residents in the République district and along Avenue Monte-Carlo in La Bocca, advising them to deploy their individual flood protection equipment as a precautionary measure.
“Installing flood barriers is recommended for all residents in at-risk areas,” said Cannes.
Pumps in the Rue de Cannes/Avenue Frédéric Mistral area have been activated and are ready for use; and all storm drains and roadside areas have been inspected, the city said.
“We urge residents to exercise caution and stay updated via the City of Cannes’ social media channels,” said Cannes.
Orange Alert for the Var
Météo-France has issued an Orange Alert (severe thunderstorm warning) for the Var, Gard, Bouches-du-Rhône; and Hérault. Anyone in the area is advised to keep away from trees and rivers; avoid travelling and take shelter in a solid building. Avoid using your phone and electrical appliances.
The Orange Alert is effective from 22:00 this evening until Wednesday morning, as a ‘Mediterranean Episode’ is expected to develop (see details below).
The weather service said: “A new Mediterranean weather event is set to develop over the Languedoc region tonight. Stationary thunderstorms are expected to form during the second half of the night, with rainfall intensities likely to deliver 80 to 120 mm of rain in a short period.
“Locally violent gusts – potentially including tornadic activity – along with hail and intense lightning, are expected during this event.”
The alert is likely to be extended to departments further east on Wednesday, said Météo-France.
Please exercise caution and stay informed about the situation in your local area.

What are Mediterranean Episodes?
In autumn (fall for our American readers), southern France can be hit by torrential rains. This is because in just a few hours, the equivalent of several months’ worth of rain can fall.
This phenomenon is known as a Mediterranean episode. These episodes can generate flash floods and inundations that endanger the safety of people and property.
To find out how they form, why they always impact the same regions and what the effect of climate change is on these phenomena, watch the video below. (It’s in English with French subtitles.)
