The final and full Official Selection of films for the Cannes Film Festival 2025 is featured below. It includes a collection of films helmed by a flurry of new directors as well as festival favourites like America’s Wes Anderson, France’s Julia Ducournau and South Africa’s Oliver Hermanus.
The significance of the official selection in Cannes
Those selected often go on to perform well internationally, with eight of last year’s Cannes Film Festival contenders being nominated for 31 Oscars. Ultimately 2024’s Palme d’Or winner ‘Anora’ scooped five Academy Awards, including Best Picture; and ‘Emilia Perez’ and ‘The Substance’ won a string of international awards.
Stars attending this year’s Cannes Film Festival
This year is guaranteed to be star-packed with the attendance of Tom Cruise (premiering Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning), Robert de Niro (to receive an Honorary Palme d’Or) and Nicole Kidman (to receive the Women in Motion Award).
Other highlights to look out for at Festival de Cannes
Other highlights at this year’s Festival include three well-known actors presenting their directorial debuts in Un Certain Regard – British actor Harris Dickinson (who starred in 2022’s Cannes winner Triangle of Sadness) will be in town with Urchin, which he also wrote, while American actress Scarlett Johansson will be competing with Eleanor the Great; and Kristen Stewart will be presenting The Chronology of Water.
U2’s Bono will also be on the Côte d’Azur for a Special Screening of the documentary ‘Stories of Surrender’, based on his one-man stage play and features never-before-seen footage. It will later stream on Apple TV+ from 30 May.
Cannes favourite Ethan Coen will also be presenting a film in the Midnight Screening category.
The official selection was announced on 10 April 2025 by Cannes Film Festival President Iris Knobloch and General Delegate Thierry Frémaux. A few extra films have since been added. Here is the final list:
