Cannes Film Festival Contenders 2024

The Cannes Film Festival’s prize-giving ceremony takes place this evening, Saturday 23 May 2024, with 22 films competing to win the coveted Palme D’Or, an award (with a golden palm) which guarantees its winner worldwide release and inevitable success. UPDATE: Cannes Film Festival 2024 Winners here.

Over the past 10 days thousands of film-makers and journalists have gathered in Cannes to watch the feature films selected for the official competition, as well as hundreds of other screenings in different side competitions. Tonight the Cannes Jury, under the presidency this year of Barbie director Greta Gerwig, will announce the winners of the official competition. So who will win?

Many of this year’s films have had a common theme of highlighting women – from ‘Emelia Perez’ (where a drug baron becomes a better person when he becomes a she) to Substance (much of which was filmed in the south of France), where the self-loathing that society piles on women, is manifested by a brilliant Demi Moore in grotesque (and sometimes humorous!) acts of violence. There was also a lot of nudity this year.

The Cannes Film Festival 2024’s offerings have been an interesting mix from around the globe, although journalists have complained that many of them have stretched to almost three hours, with some – like Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Megalopolis’ – coming in at over three hours.

These are the contenders. Riviera Edition will provide updates this evening with the winners, live from Cannes’ famous Palais (which has been called The Temple of Film by many of the stars at this year’s festival): (See the Cannes Film Festival 2024 Winners here.)
