The annual star-studded Rose Ball (Le Bal de la Rose) took place last week in Monaco. The glamorous VIP charity event, which has been held for almost 70 years, is one of the Principality’s most popular yearly festivities where the rich, royal and fabulous dine and dance till the early hours of the morning.

This year, the Princess of Hanover (Princess Caroline) – who is president of the Princess Grace Foundation – chose a ‘Sunset Ball’ theme, and gave flamboyant French designer Christian Louboutin carte blanche to create his vision. He did not disappoint!
Glamorous guests at the majestic Salle des Étoiles venue were immersed in a fabulous world of lush Caribbean forest with roses and exotic flowers, surrounded by the sounds of reggaeton and Caribbean island music.
“Guests could enjoy a small beach café, the Monaco Sunset Bar, before sitting down with their feet in the sand to admire the sunset to the sounds of reggaeton and Caribbean music,” said Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer.

Caribbean-themed performers entertained the 800 guests before an amazing Earth, Wind and Fire experience was presented by former EWF member Al McKay.
The story behind the Rose Ball
The event was first held in 1954 by Henry Astric, Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer’s then Artistic Director Henry Astric. Three years later, Princess Grace arranged for a major ballet to be presented, and the event became a high society international soirée.
In 1964, the Princess Grace Foundation (which supports humanitarian programmes to help children) was formed and the gala became a fun and fabulous charity event. Before Christian Louboutin, the late Karl Lagerfeld was Artistic Director for years.
Each year members of high society gather at the Rose Ball for a magical evening of entertainment, a gourmet dinner, and to dance the night away (Princess Charlene is apparently a great dancer!). This year, the sensational menu was created by Marcel Ravin from Blue Bay restaurant in Monte-Carlo (which has two Michelin Stars).

But most importantly, they gather to raise funds. We don’t have this year’s figure yet, but in 2022 the Rose Ball raised almost €295,000 for the Princess Grace Foundation.

Since 1983 it has been the late Princess Grace’s daughter Princess Caroline who presides over the event, usually supported by her brother Prince Albert II of Monaco and other members of the Grimaldi royal family, as well as stars from the world of entertainment. Previous guests have included Naomi Campbell, Carla Bruni, Dita von Teese, Pedro Almodovar and more!
