Young Norwegian filmmaker Halfdan Ullmann T\u00f8ndel has received a major award at this year\u2019s Cannes Film Festival, following in the footsteps of his legendary Swedish grandfather, director Ingmar Bergman.<\/p>\n
Halfdan\u2019s \u2018Armand\u2019, about the toll on caretakers, was awarded the coveted Cam\u00e9ra d’Or prize on Saturday evening, 25 May 2024. The prize is given to the best first feature film presented in one of festival\u2019s selections. \u2018Armand\u2019, was included in the festival\u2019s Un Certain Regard section – a section in which both his famous grandfather as well as his grandmother, Norwegian actress Liv Ullman, have previously had films.<\/p>\n
Halfdan says it was an incredible feeling to have won. \u201cFive hours ago I was playing with my children in Oslo,\u201d says the 34-year-old, \u201cand now I\u2019m here!\u201d His trip to Cannes was so last-minute that he actually got waylaid in a taxi and didn\u2019t make it in time to receive the award on stage. However, he did make it on time for the press conference afterwards.<\/p>\n
There was a buzz around \u2018Armand\u2019 from its first screening in Cannes, something that Halfdan could not escape. \u201cSuddenly I was getting crazy attention,\u201d he admits. To prevent himself getting \u201ctoo self-satisfied\u201d he said he felt it important to get on with making his next film. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to be careful to stay balanced,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n
Addressing the fact that he comes from a great cinema family, Halfdan smiles and says: \u201cI can\u2019t do anything about it. It just is. My grandmother and grandfather were great legends of cinema but I didn\u2019t discuss Tchaikovsky with my grandfather when i was seven.\u201d<\/p>\n
He says other people can talk about his relatives, but for him, he has to just \u201cfocus on my films. He (Bergman) made 57 films, and we can make comparisons in the end.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
