Short Film winner:<\/strong> The Man Who Could Not Be Silent<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Camera d\u2019Or winner:<\/strong> Armand (by Norwegian director\u00a0Halfdan Ullmann T\u00f8ndel)<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Best Screenplay<\/strong>: The Substance.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Described as \u201cbald and beautifully bonkers\u201d – \u2018The Substance\u2019 – by Coralie Fargeat, won. Coralie said: \u201cThank you so much. I can\u2019t tell you how proud I am to be here tonight in the most beautiful place for cinema.\u201d She thanked all those who helped make her dream come true – particularly Demi Moore, who was sitting in the audience, saying \u201cwhat an incredible gift it has been to work with you, I\u2019m so proud of the work we\u2019ve done together.\u201d Coralie said: \u201cThe movie is about women and what they experience in the world, and how violent it can still be. I really believe a movie can change the world so I hope this will be a little stone that helps cause ripples. I thank all the women who speak out. We need a revolution and I don\u2019t think it\u2019s started yet. Let\u2019s start it all together.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Best Actress:<\/strong> The stars of Emilia Perez.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

All the actresses of Emilia Perez, including Selena Gomez, were selected as a harmony is stronger when it resounds together, than an individual picked out – a harmony of \u2018sisterhood\u2019 in a year when many films honoured women. The main actress very tearfully and gratefully accepted the award, thanking her incredible director, Selema Gomez – \u201cI\u2019m in love with her\u201d, and thanked Cannes for its incredible hospitality. In Spanish, she expressed how trans people are struggling every day.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Best Actor<\/strong>: Jessie Piemons, Kinds of Kindness (not present at the ceremony this evening, although he was here earlier in the week)<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Special Prize<\/strong>: The Seed of the Sacred Fig by Mohammad RASOULOF.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Unsurprisingly, the director who recently had to flee his country, Iran, has received a standing ovation. He lives in exile in Europe. While excited to receive the prize he said he is extremely sad about what\u2019s going on for his people, and the daily suffering he is going through, and he thanks all those who go to see the film.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Best Director:<\/strong> Miguel Gomes, Grand Tour<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

He says: \u201cSometimes I get lucky. Thank you Festival de Cannes for inviting me. Thank you for the jury for deciding to give me this prize.\u201d As a director, he directs and calls for a \u201cstage invasion\u201d of his producer and stars, as the director \u201cneeds lots of help\u201d. He paid tribute to the Portuguese directors who inspired him.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Jury Prize<\/strong>: Emilia Perez – directed byJacques Audiard<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Grand Prix<\/strong> 2024: All We Imagine as Light – directed by Payal Kapadia<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The great prize is awarded by American actress and producer Viola Davis. She says: \u201cArt does not come from a safe place. Stories that matter aren\u2019t born in tranquility\u2026 The voices that need to be heard scream\u2026 (This award) is for an award for change. The Cannes Film Festival provides Grand Prix to strongest of these voices\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201dIt was already a dream to be selected\u201d said the director, and thanked her actresses who contributed to make the film their own.\u201d She asks Cannes not to wait another 30 years to invite an Indian film. She says: \u201cIt really takes a village to make a film.\u201d Often women are pitted against each other. The film is about the friendship of three women. She says friendship can lead to solidarity and empathy and support and these are the values we should all be striving She also thanked the workers behind the scene that make Cannes so successful and says she stands in solidarity with their movement.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Honary Palme d\u2019Or<\/strong>: George Lucas (American director)<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Lucas received a standing ovation. The Festival invited somebody as huge as him, a lifetime friend and Godfather, Francis Ford Coppola. Coppola says \u2018exceptional\u2019 to be there to celebrate the imagination of my \u201ckid brother\u201d. They met when George was 19 and came to watch Coppola direct his first film. George: \u201cI thank him for everything he\u2019s done for me.\u201d First came to Cannes 52 years ago. \u201cI\u2019m just a kid who grew up in a vineyard in California, who made films with some friends like Francis in San Francisco\u2026. I\u2019ve actually never made a film as a director in LA.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Palme d\u2019Or<\/strong>: Anora – by Sean Baker<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Greta Gerwig says: \u201cA human and humane film that let us hope beyond hope\u2026and then broke our hearts.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Sean, overwhelmed, says: \u201cI wanna thank the jury\u2026 you\u2019ve made a dream come true\u201d and says how all their accomplishments make it such an honour. \u201cI\u2019m still in disbelief that you invited our little baby to the ball.\u201d He also thanked David Cronenberg and Francis Ford Coppola who influenced him so much. \u201cThis singularly has been my goal for the last 30 years, so I don\u2019t know what I\u2019ll do for the rest of my life\u2026\u201d, he jokes, and then speaks about the importance of keeping cinema alive and making movies for theatrical release. Watching at home, scrolling through emails, is not the way. Watching with others is a great communal experience with friends and strangers. \u201cThe future of cinema is where it started – in a movie theatre,\u201d he insists. His mum introduced him to film when he was five, so he thanked her and said \u201cI love you Mum\u201d.
