In 1638, King Louis XIII placed the kingdom under the protection of the Virgin Mary and called for special processions to be held each year on 15 August.

Its status survived France’s changing monarchies, republics and the formal separation of Church and State in 1905 when France officially became a secular republic (with no official religion).

The Assumption remains one of the country’s 11 official public holidays and is specifically listed in the French Labour Code.

It is also an official public holiday in Monaco, where the Prince’s Government lists the Assumption among the Principality’s legal holidays.

The Assumption on the Mediterranean

Across France, the occasion is traditionally marked by church services, pilgrimages and processions dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

For many people today, however, the quinze août is simply one of the great landmarks of the French summer: a day for the beach, a long lunch with family and friends, village celebrations and, in some destinations, evening fireworks or entertainment. Antibes will be hosting a free rock ‘n roll orchestra concert at Place Nationale (starts 20:30).

Will everything be closed?

Not necessarily. Unlike 1 May, most employees in France are not automatically required to have the day off on every public holiday. Whether a business closes can depend on its sector, employment agreements and individual arrangements. Some shops, like Monoprix, sent out emails this week to their customers notifying them they will be open on 15 August.

Government offices, banks and many smaller shops are likely to close, while restaurants, beach clubs, supermarkets and tourist attractions may remain open or operate with special hours. Public transport may also follow a Sunday or public-holiday timetable.

As the holiday falls on a Saturday in 2026, it will not create the coveted French pont, or long weekend, for most workers. Nevertheless, with the Riviera already at the height of its summer season, expect beaches, roads and seaside restaurants to be particularly busy.

If you have been wondering why some shops and businesses are closed today, Saturday 15 August 2026, the answer lies in one of France’s Catholic celebrations.
