DESCRIPTION:This week audiences are in for a treat from Opéra de Monte-Carlo. Verdi’s masterpiece – Aida – will be performed at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco. The opera house promises “a fusion of visual grandeur and dramatic intensity” with an exceptional cast. \nSet against a romanticized vision of ancient Egypt\, Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida portrays the tragic clash between Aida and Amneris\, two proud princesses battling for the love of the valiant warrior Radamès. Originally commissioned to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal\, the opera was conceived on a grand\, almost cinematic scale with elephants included! \nWhen the work first came to Monaco in 1884\, several large ensemble scenes had to be trimmed due to the limited size of the Opéra’s stage. In 2025\, this is no longer an issue for Davide Livermore and his team\, who will make full use of the expansive stage at the Grimaldi Forum. DESCRIPTION:Monaco has been providing its residents and visitors with a star-studded summer\, thanks to its Monte-Carlo Summer Festival (5 July to 15 August) with the likes of Benson Boone and Santana taking to the Salles des Etoiles stage. And it’s not over yet! \nThe festival kicked off on 5 July with an homage to Jean-Jacques Goldman for the Fight Aids Monaco evening\, with the Goldmen. Since then audiences have been entertained by Billy Idol (at the Monaco Red Cross Gala)\, American hitmaker Benson Boone\, Carlos Santana (on his world tour)\, Paul Kalkbrenner and The Dire Straits Experience. (Unfortunately German rock band the Scorpions had to cancel as Klaus Meine is currently unwell and has been placed on full vocal rest.) \nComing up at the Monte Carlo Summer Festival\n2 August – Will Smith\nThe movie star and rap pioneer recipient of several Grammy Awards\, will put on a whirlwind show displaying class and rhythm. It promises to be a unique performance by a charismatic artist. In recent years\, Will has founded media companies\, written best-selling books and become one of the most influential personalities of his generation. Back on stage and in concert in France for the first time\, the artist will be at the Positiv Festival d’Orange* before coming to Salle des Etoiles. In Monte-Carlo he will revive his revered icons of American song\, from Sinatra to Sammy Davis Junior. (*The Positiv Festival is held annually at the ancient theatre of Orange\, in PACA’s Rhone Valley. The 2\,000 year-old historic monument is listed by UNESCO. DESCRIPTION:Every year on June 21st\, the day of the summer solstice\, something special happens in France. As the sun starts to go down in the sky\, the streets begin to fill up with music. It’s the Fête de la Musique\, and whether you’re in a tiny village or a bustling city on the Côte d’Azur\, you’re likely to hear everything from jazz and rock to rap\, hip hop and classical. \nHistory of the Fête de la Musique\nThe world owes a huge debt of gratitude to two men who were instrumental in creating this event in 1982. The first is Maurice Fleuret\, a composer who was Director of Music and Dance at the Ministry of Culture from 1981-1986. The second is Jack Lang\, then Minister of Culture\, who suggested they work together. The idea of a popular music festival was born from the realization that paid concerts were often reserved for the elite few. And that the thrill that comes from playing and listening to live music should be available to everyone. Today World Music Day takes place in over 120 countries. \nFrench Streets Come Alive with Music\nThe joy lies in the fact that anyone can play. Whether you’re a local\, a tourist\, a child\, or a professional musician\, it really doesn’t matter. It’s all about celebrating music. People set up in village squares\, on street corners\, in cafés\, and even in front of shops. Some shows are planned\, others just pop up. It’s a family friendly event and people sometimes just stroll around close to their neighbourhood. And then wander from one live performance to the next. \nIt’s fun\, it’s (mostly) free\, and the music often continues until very late into the night. While 21 June is the official date for the Fête de la Musique\, in some cities\, like Nice and Cannes\, the festival runs from 20-22 June 2025. DESCRIPTION:The annual Nuits Carrées Festival will be held this year from 12 – 14 June 2025. As with last year\, the open-air concerts will be held at Pré des Pêcheurs esplanade in Antibes (near the port). \nEvery year\, this festival features both headline acts and new bands\, celebrating the start of the summer season. DESCRIPTION:Austrian violinist and composer Yury Revich\, and accordionist Basha Slavinska\, will be performing in Saint Tropez on Thursday 16 January 2025. \nIt’s sure to be an excellent evening! Revich has been honoured with several international awards including the International Classical Music Award\, with his recording of the Saint-Georges double concertos reaching the TOP 100 of the US Billboard Classical Charts. At 33\, he’s played at Carnegie Hall\, his tracks have been used in Bridgerton and he’s performed alongside the likes of Andrea Bocelli. Revich is also UNICEF Austria Ambassador. \nThe event has been organised by Tropezian Society of Friends of Music\, and starts at 7pm.
