31 Oscar Nominations for 8 Films from Cannes Film Festival’s Official Selection

The Cannes Film Festival organisers say they are “delighted” to note that EIGHT of the films in its 2024 Official Selection have made the shortlist for this year’s Oscar nominations.

The films have generated a total of 31 nominations across 17 categories! It’s a great testament to the Cannes selection process, overseen by Cannes Film Festival President Iris Knobloch, who was re-elected last week for her second three-year term. She confirmed she will “continue to protect the independence of the selection process” and “relentlessly support emerging talents”.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today unveiled the Oscar nominees for its 97th ceremony, which will be held on March 2, 2025 in Los Angeles.

Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez, winner of the 2024 Jury Prize and Best Performance by an Actress Award, leads the ways with 13 nominations, a record for a non-English-language film.

Sean Baker’s Anora, winner of the Palme d’or at the 77th Festival de Cannes, totals 6 nominations.

Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, which won Best Screenplay Award in Cannes, received 5 Oscar nominations. Much of The Substance was actually filmed on the French Riviera in Cannes and Nice! (And its star, Demi Moore, has already won the Golden Globe for Best Actress.)

Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice and Gints Zilbalodis’ Flow each received 2 Oscar nominations.

Mohammad Rasoulof’s The Seed of the Sacred Fig, winner of the Jury Special Prize, received one Oscar nomination, as did Nebojša Slijepcevic’s The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent, winner of the Short Film Palme d’or, and Magnus Von Horn’s The Girl with the Needle.

“The Festival de Cannes warmly congratulates the nominees and wishes them the success they deserve at the 97th Academy Award ceremony,” the Cannes Film Festival said in a press statement today.
